When My Time Has Run Out

When we reach a certain age, it's been my experience that we spend a little more time reflecting on what lies ahead. Regardless of what we may do to try and extend our time on this earth, we all have an expiration date, much like a carton of milk. These bodies aren't made to last forever, and they don't. One look at a cemetery will confirm that statement. With that in mind, I would like to share a poem that was written by a friend of mine on the writing web site, Fan Story. Her name is Debi Marquette and when she shared this with me, it resonated, so I thought I'd pass it on.

When My Time Has Run Out

At the end of the day, do I know that I've done

Everything that I could, not to hurt anyone

Did I gossip at all, would my parents be proud

Have I held on to hurt, more than should be allowed

Did I welcome someone, try to show them the ropes

Or just think of myself, try to crush all their hopes

When I saw souls were lost, did help them to find

Did I do all I could, to help their peace of mind

I keep doubting myself, do I have what it takes

I am thankful that Jesus died for my mistakes

Did I let anger go,  or did I cause a scene

Have I forgiven all, try to wipe the slate clean

Have I given enough, where I most need to give

Do I live in a way, that I know I should live

Do I feel empathy, to those most needing love

Have I prayed when I should, to my Lord up above

I try not to judge, I know it's not my place

There are times I have strayed, from His sweet loving grace

Have I been good enough, am I still at a loss

Do I fully accept what He did on the cross

When its all said and done, has my name been engraved

So when I leave this earth, will I know I've been saved

When I look at my life, see what it's been about

Do I know where I'll be when my time has run out

Of course our works aren't what saves us, but our lives should certainly be a reflection of our beliefs. When people look at us, do they see something they would like to emulate, or are they turned off by our speech and actions?

I hope that in the quiet times, when you're alone with yourself, you'll take a moment to reflect on the kind of person you are, and who you would like to be. The world could use some real heroes right now. Perhaps you fill the bill.
